Elastics (rubber bands)

elastics (rubber bands)

Wearing elastics (or rubber bands) improves the fit of your upper and lower teeth. Wear rubber bands as instructed, and remember that the rubber bands work far more efficiently if they're worn as prescribed.

Forsus Springs

As part of your treatment you may be required to wear "Forsus springs" or "Powerscope" which are a fixed functional appliances that are used for class II bite correction. This appliance is designed to hold your teeth and lower jaw in a different relationship than you usually posture, while still allowing you to open and move your jaw freely. During treatment it is hidden inside the cheeks and almost undetectable. The Forsus spring is made out of nickel titanium so it provides a constant, non-decaying force.

Bionator

A Bionator is a functional appliance designed to encourage mandibular (lower) jaw growth during normal development. These appliances utilise the muscle action of the patient to produce orthodontic or orthopaedic forces. The Bionator appliance does all these things by gently redirecting and adjusting the body's own forces, the Bionator itself is neutral. Moving the lower jaw forward has many advantages, other than aesthetic and dental advantages, such as increasing the airways and promoting nasal breathing and lip competence.

Herbst® appliance

The Herbst® appliance reduces increased overjet by encouraging the lower jaw forward and the upper molars backward. This fixed appliance is used mostly for younger, growing children and is worn for about 12 to 15 months.

Palatal expander

The palatal expander "expands" (or widens) your upper jaw by putting gentle pressure on your upper molars each time an adjustment is made. Your orthodontist will instruct you about when and how to adjust your expander. When you achieve the desired expansion, you will wear the appliance for several months to allow healing and the laying down of new bone making the upper jaw wider. This creates more room for erupting teeth and for the correction of crossbites.
